Educator Spotlight in CS: Cori Sowers

Computer Science is an integral part of our everyday lives. Teaching students about computer science is not just coding and working on a computer but teaching algorithms or step by step processes like brushing your teeth or the scientific method and debugging by figuring out the missing or broken part in an engine or missing ingredient in a recipe.

“Five years ago, I was sparked by another district, to create and organize STEAM Night for my district. STEAM Night is a carnival-like event that is a safe, fun, interactive evening for the entire family where we create and learn together about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. By teaching students about STEAM, it develops their curiosity and creativity along with tapping into their observation skills! For our 5th annual STEAM Night, we are adding the +C for Computer Science and Community! Computer Science can be seen in all aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), but this year I wanted to emphasize the key role of Computer Science and how it integrates into many jobs throughout our local community!” – Cori Sowers
