Thursday, March 17, was the annual Southside Virginia Regional Technology Consortium Awards program, where individual educators from 27 school divisions are recognized for using technology to achieve the mission of SVRTC. Katina was selected for recognition by her school division and peers. Just reading her story, we can all see why!

“Hello! My name is Katina Fitzgerald-Johnson and I have been in the education field for 16 years. I have spent 15 years of my life in the classroom at the elementary level. Two years teaching 2nd grade, six years teaching 3rd grade, seven years teaching 4th grade, 5th-grade summer school, and this is my first year out of the classroom as the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at Sussex Central Middle School “Go Tigers!” I absolutely love using technology to deliver information to anyone! Before, in the classroom, I was always looking for programs, software, and activities that brought learning to life and made it fun! Now that I am in the support field, I work with teachers in the same capacity with that same energy! I have actually coined the phrase “Playtime PD” for my staff! There will be no dry and boring over here! I am so honored to receive this award as it is my first year in a support position and I absolutely love it!”

Katina is the Lead for her school’s CS Ready Impact Team, which includes administration, grade level teachers and specialists. She and school colleagues recently hosted a youth summit event, where students had access to a CodeVA session about their social media footprints. Always looking for ways to soak up and integrate computer science and technology into everything she does, Katina is a fantastic ambassador for CS for teachers and students and the county. Here’s to many more years as an outstanding ITRT supporting Sussex Central students and teachers!
