AP Test Prep

Code VA is excited to be able to provide AP Test prep sessions for current students for the free response portion of the AP Computer Science A  test and support sessions for the performance task for the AP Computer Science Principles course. All materials and resources will be released and linked below prior to the online sessions, feel free to reach out to training@codevirginia.org if you have any questions!

  • Exam Date: May 15th, 2020 4:00 pm Eastern Time
    • The AP CS A exam in will only cover the Free Response (FRQ) portion of the exam where students write out code in Java. Students will be tested in a 45-minute online free-response exam they complete at home.
  • Summary of Test Format: Students will complete two FRQ in 45 minutes. Question 1 will cover Array/ArrayList and Question 2 will cover Methods and Control Structures. These sessions will emphasize decoding the questions and best practices for earning points. All questions for these sessions have been created by the instructor, a College Board AP Table lead for the AP CS A exam.
  • Format: Each week the hour long session will cover 2 questions, QA & QB. The first half of each session will review the grading of the question from the previous session, the second half will release the next question and cover strategies for solving. Students then may work on their own until the next session.
    • Start Date: Wed, April 8th at 7PM EST
      • Sessions held weekly – Mondays and Wednesdays at 7PM EST
      • Final Session Date May 6th
      • Session 1 – Decoding the AP CS FRQ questions, release Q1A

  • Exam Date: AP CS P Performance Tasks must be submitted by May 26th at 11:59 p.m. ET
    • We recommend submitting early due to the large volume of submissions at the last minute.
  • Summary of Test Format: AP CS P only includes the Explore and Create Performance Tasks. The PTs require students submit with no direct suggestions for their submissions. That said, teachers may provide guidance and rubrics for students to use in self evaluating and revising their submissions.
  • Format: Sessions cover a checklist for students to use in reviewing and revising their work, then perform a mock grading of released samples. 
    • Start Date: April 14th
      • Sessions held weekly – Tuesdays at 7PM EST
      • Final session date: May 6th
