Educator Spotlight in CS: Logan Childress

Logan Childress is the Emerging Technology Specialist in Bristol City, VA at both Virginia Middle and Virginia High Schools. He and his team have set up an in-house Virtual Reality Lab at the high school – CodeVA leadership and staff had a chance to visit last month and are thrilled at the CS opportunities students in Bristol City have access to. Mr. Childress knows, however, that a computer science mindset is more than access to technology and tools. He advocates for integration and application across curricula. We couldn’t agree more!

“Computer science is an important part of education, whether it seems like an obvious fit for every subject area or not. I know many are hesitant to integrate computer science into their classrooms due to various reasons. However, students benefit greatly from these types of experiences, especially as they move into higher education or the workforce and find just how deep the use of computers and computer science goes in their chosen fields.”

“Music class, for instance, might seem like an obvious place to learn to play an instrument. But there are tons of opportunities to teach students about synthesized sounds, recording technology, and even how programming is used as part of the music industry. All of this is music, but with the simple integration of computer science, so much more is available for the students to learn about.”
