Focused on data science and #MeMyDataAndI, this year CodeVA is hosting an online LAUNCH event along with an entire virtual week of speakers, family nights, kids activities, competitions, and professional learning sessions for educators. CS Ed Week Launch! – 9 AM Learn More CS Ed Week Launch is the kickoff event for our whole week of activities where students and teachers alike can learn about CS and data science across VA. Attendees will hear from a diverse range of CS professionals and CS Education supporters.	Driving Data Science with Eureka Workshop 10 AM – 11 AM Learn More Learn how data drives the world around us with CodeVA’s Eureka Workshops. Engage with the world around you through data science by learning how ecologists track the health of Virginia’s ecosystems and use data to draw comparisons between Virginia’s watersheds. Watch what happens when data gets manipulated and learn why it’s so important to protect your data through this workshop. CS Deep Dive Workshop – 5 PM – 8 PM Learn More This introductory, standalone course is a 3-hour session to provide educators with a rich exploration of each of the Six Strands of Computer Science (CS) SOLs. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the application of each CS strand within the classroom. In this hands-on session, participants will gain computer science knowledge, use CS tools, and take part in practical experiences with integrated CS activities that can be used immediately in their classrooms. Participants Participants from an introductory level of CS knowledge and background will find this training informative and engaging, including K-8 classroom teachers, instructional technology staff, specialists (Gifted, SPED, ELL, STEM, etc.), curriculum writers, and instructional coaches. *This is an introductory course that has no prerequisites. It can be taken in conjunction with or independent of CS Quickstart.
CS Landscape in VA Webinar 5 PM – 6:30 PM Learn More This informative 1-hour webinar for educators and families will provide a snapshot of Computer Science (CS) in Virginia. Participants will explore Virginia’s current CS landscape including career opportunities, available jobs, and the VDOE expectations for integrating computer science in public schools. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of why students need a foundational understanding of CS at an early age. Additionally, participants will be provided resources and professional learning opportunities for continued exploration of computer science. Participants Participants from an introductory level of CS knowledge and background will find this webinar informative and engaging, including instructional leaders at the building or district level, counselors, K-12 classroom teachers, instructional technology staff, instructional coaches, specialists (Gifted, SPED, ELL, STEM, librarians, art teachers, music teachers, etc.), curriculum writers, and families. *This is an introductory webinar that has no prerequisites.	CS Quickstart Workshop 5 PM – 8 PM Learn More This introductory course is a 3-hour session to provide all K-12 educators with a jumpstart for understanding the Virginia Computer Science (CS) Standards of Learning and how CS integration can look within the classroom, school, and district. Participants will explore the Six Strands of Computer Science SOLs and how to connect these standards to the 5 C’s and Profile of a Graduate requirements, In this hands-on session, participants will gain computer science knowledge, use CS tools, and take part in practical experiences with plugged and unplugged integrated CS activities that can be used immediately in classrooms. Participants Participants from an introductory level of CS knowledge and background will find this training informative and engaging, including K-12 classroom teachers, instructional technology staff, instructional coaches, specialists (Gifted, SPED, ELL, STEM, librarians, art teachers, music teachers, etc.), curriculum writers, and instructional leaders at the building or district level. *This is an introductory course that has no prerequisites. It can be taken in conjunction with or independent of CS Deep Dive.	Data-Based Music: Sonic Pi Coding – 6 PM Learn More Data sonification is when scientists use sound to help them understand data. Take that process one step further, and you can create data-based music. In this live stream, see how live-coders can use data to make beats, melodies, and other types of sound as part of an electronic music performance. You can even follow along with the stream using Sonic Pi, a free coding tool for making music. No experience needed! Participants Any and all students, teachers, parents, and community members are welcome to attend! This session is designed to be an overview of what it might look like to create data-based music with Sonic Pi; you will learn a lot, and come away with some ideas for making music and code of your own

CS In Your Neighborhood Competition

CodeVA’s state-wide CS In Your Neighborhood competition invites students from Kindergarten through 12th grade to submit creative “Data Selfies” representing their data footprint. Submissions can be individual, small group or by class, and take any form of shareable media including: visual art, music, video, or code/web content. Two winners from each of the eight Virginia Superintendent Regions be part of a total of sixteen winners from across the state. Students selected to represent their region will win a free laptop or a classroom set of robots!

Submissions should address the following prompt:
In a digital world, data is not only something that we collect and use to understand meaning but also something that we “leave behind” or give away. We create data each morning when we determine what to wear, which route to take to school/work, and what we need to do each day. Our digital footprint can allow others to learn more about us. This data is a reflection of the choices we make when we use technology.

Create a “data selfie”, a piece of creative work that captures your relationship to your data. Does your data influence the way that others see you? How does this selfie compare to the other ways you define yourself? Your selfie should explore those questions as well as:

Include the kinds of data that you have left behind when using technology
Share a part of yourself that digital data cannot learn about you
Investigate the ways that digital data is collected and used, and how that impacts our daily lives.

Submissions are due by April 1st, 2022 at 4pm.

CS Educator of the Year

Every year CodeVA recognizes an outstanding computer science educator from the state of Virginia at Computer Science Education Week. This year, we will be recognizing not just one, but six educators! If you know an outstanding K-12 ITRT/Coach/support personnel, administrator or Pre-K-12th grade educator who goes above and beyond with CS, we want to hear from you!

The CS Educators of the Year will be selected by a panel using the following criteria:
